Body Mass Index

I want to make sure that people fully understand what BMI is all about.  It’s not a perfect way to measure who obese you are.  There are people who are actually very skinny but have lots of internat fat that this method cannot measure.  It’s a good indicator but not something to live by.  Click if you want more info on Fat and Body Mass Index.

Hill Walking For Weight Loss

A friend of mine has just come back from doing a lot of walking for two weeks.  It wasn’t quite hill walking but there was a lot of undulating ground shall we say.  Anyhow, after 2 weeks he had lots 5lbs and that’s despite drinking alcohol everyday plus eating bread and pasta.  It just goes to show how important exercise is when you are trying to slim down and get healthy.  People obsess a bit too much about calories and yet they hardly do any physical activity whatsoever.

What Part of Your Body Do You Want To Change?

I find it funny how people can really hate parts of their bodies and obsess about it. Some people want a flat stomach, others want a big bum so get butt implants. Then there are the flabby bits around the arms. Maybe it’s not a good idea to think too much about one part of the body and instead think more about the whole body and how healthy it is. However I do feel bad for people who find it difficult to find clothes that fit proberly because they’re “out of proportion” copared to the average person.

It’s also bizare how most people want to lose weight and will go to all sort of lengths including weight loss surgery but then people get butt implants.  I will never fully understand what is going on in people’s minds.

Vary Your Exercising

Do you vary your workout?  Us humans tend to get stuck in a bit of a rut when it comes to life in general.  The same thing can happen with exercising.  You find a particular work out regime that you like and you don’t change it for months.  The problem is that your body gets used to it and your progress and really slow down.  Instead you should look to rotate your regime every other month so that you can prevent this from happening.  You should also find it more interesting doing it this way too.  Try having a look at some new books or DVDs on exercising or you could even have a look to see what exercise classes are available.

Muscle Weighs More Than Fat

Don’t forget that muscle weighs more than fat so if you are trying to lose weight you should note that you might not lose as much as you expect.  The best way to gauge your progress is to look at your waist measurements or even look to see about choosing a method of measuring you body fat such as using callipers or special weighing scales.  A lot of people stress out when they see the pounds not dropping off when they step onto the scales.

Nutrition and Exercise

Nutrition whilst exercising should also not be ignored.  There’s no point in doing loads of exercising if you are not giving your body the nutrients it needs to repair itself.  When you work out your muscles, they are broken down and then rebuild stronger.  In order to do this they need protein which consist of amino acids.  So if you are doing a lot of exercise taking a protein drink before and after is a really good idea.  There are lots of protein powders that can be bought including whey, egg, pea, hemp and brown rice.  So even if you are vegan you should be able to find a protein powder that will help you build muscle.  My friend actually put together this blog on buying nutrition supplements which has details of what they all do and where you can buy them from ebay.

Pilates Performer

We bought our Pilates Perfomer some years ago and although I love it, there are some things that QVC didn’t really mention.  For instance, they said it was an ideal form of exercise for the elderly.  This is great if that elderly person happens to have a strong son to move the machine up the stairs to wherever it is the Performer will be used.  But if the elderly person is on their own they will find it way too difficult to move it.  Also, I even find it a bit cumbersome to move it from under my bed into the middle of the room.  It’s better if you have a dedicated room for it where it’s all set up ready to use each day.  Another problem I have with it is that the cords have to be adjusted to the length of your arms and legs.  This is OK if you are the only person to use it but it would be a pain in the bum to adjust it all the time if there are various people in your family using it.  I think that Pilates might have improved this feature in their more recent models but I’m not that sure.  After telling my friend “Big Fat Weight Loser” about Pilates he has really embraced this for of exercising and has really helped him along to reaching his goal weight.  Now I just need to remind him to update his blog on a more regular basis!
